Greenpeace Versus Unilever, Dove

by Sasha Manuel on April 22nd, 2008

Have you guys seen the Dove Onslaught advert?

You have to commend Dove for their efforts in furthering the importance of self-esteem when it comes to true beauty. However, I recently learned about this issue that Greenpeace.org has raised against Unilever.

“Unilever, the company behind products like Dove soap, is driving forest destruction and speeding up climate change by buying palm oil from companies which are destroying Indonesia’s rainforests to make way for palm oil plantations. By their own admission, Unilever is the biggest single user of palm oil in the world.” — Greenpeace.org

They’ve just released a clip, Onslaughter.

It’s a parody of the Dove advert you’ve just seen above. It’s meant to bring our attention to an environmental responsibility that everyone one should give importance to. No one is excused.

I now feel guilty cuz I’m a Dove user. I patronise a lot of Unilever products.

First Impressions: DOVE Beauty Body Wash, Calming Night
Dove Soap, Gentle Exfoliating
Bento Beauty Tip: Cleanse, Moisturise & Hydrate with Green Tea & Cucumber Extract

However, if there’s an environmental issue that should be addressed such as this one, I believe they should listen.

Greenpeace.org is not calling for a boycott. They just want companies like Unilever to act responsibly. Fair enough, yea?

Somehow I’m always skeptical of claims made by Greenpeace. I’m just not sure if we’re getting the whole story. Does this mean they advocate Dove switching to petroleum derived chemicals instead? If not, what are the alternatives? Buy product from farmers who aren’t clearing rainforests? Then what do the people of Indonesia do when their livelihood is taken away?

I don’t really have answers and I’m all for stopping the capricious cutting of rain forest. But the issue doesn’t seem as simple as making Unilever stop buying palm oil from Indonesia.

I’m guessing it’s a call to moderate production of products that make use of palm oil. Creating awareness. If you increase production it can only mean it was done for profit. Since Indonesia will take advantage of the demand cuz it means more money, they’re forgoing their responsibilities to the environment. I understand that the business will grow but they do have to act responsibly, too. I’d love it if my future children will see and experience the same things I’ve seen and experienced in this planet, and not call certain things extinct just because of a bar of soap. :)
