The Oxygen Paradox

by Sasha Manuel on October 11th, 2007

Oxygen is a vital life-force and, at the same time, is a proven harmful cause of cellular deterioration.

Genuinely indispensable, oxygen transforms nutrients into energy. Nevertheless it can also prove to be injurious as during the different chemical stages of this transformation process, intermediary molecules appear – these are “reactive oxygen species” or free radicals. Their distinctive feature is that they have all lost an electron. In order to recover their missing electrons, these molecules attack their neighboring molecules in turn, provoking a series of oxidation reactions.

Free Radical Chain Reaction. This refers to the domino effect of oxidation reactions. A molecule takes from neighbouring molecules the missing electron, triggering these molecules to do the same.

I just thought I’d share this bit of info to you guys. I read it on Lancôme’s advertorial. It gave me a clearer perspective on just how much anti-oxidants are important in my beauty regimen. Makeup can only go so far as to presenting a flawless skin. I much rather prefer to establish a better skincare routine to ensure a real and effective path to achieving better skin.

I hope you were able to pick up a thing or two. Anyway, stay beautiful!
